What Causes Wearing Off?

The development of wearing-off is thought to result from the combination of disease progression and the rapid break down of levodopa in the body, resulting in a feeling that the effects of levodopa are fading out. Symptoms of wearing-off may be addressed by adding additional therapies to the treatment regimen (Figure 4).

Whilst wearing off is most commonly encountered in people who are taking levodopa, it is important to note that wearing off can also occur when medication other than levodopa is being taken for Parkinson's.
